As part of the activities for the 52nd anniversary of the creation of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, the Minister of the Environment, Juan Carlos Vargas, visited the natural wonder and stressed that partnerships with the communities and the private sector have been fundamental for its good conservation.

PetroTal, operator of the Lot 95is one of the private sector partners to which Minister Vargas referred. Since 2018, the company has had a cooperation agreement with the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp) for the protection and preservation of the reserve.

This agreement provides for a long-term environmental plan with an investment of S/. 13 million. for the execution of the reserve's monitoring and control plan. It also includes support for the promotion of sustainable economic activities in the reserve and capacity building for local leaders to promote sustainable resource management.

As part of the plan's commitments, PetroTal delivered to the Ministry of the Environment (Minam) a symbolic check for S/ 400,000 which will be used to recognize the eventual winners of the "Entrepreneurs by Nature" contest that have projects in the Pacaya Samiria.

The contest, organized by Minam, promotes and strengthens enterprises based on the sustainable use of natural resources. of natural resources in protected natural areas that contribute to their conservation and generate local economic development.

Taricayas

The effort to increase the population of taricayas in the reserve is one of the most widely recognized initiatives within the environmental plan developed by PetroTal in alliance with Sernanp and other partners. This work is carried out by fishermen from the Puinahua district who are experts in handling the eggs of this species.

A portion of the eggs that are laid on semi-artificial beaches is destined for sustainable consumption. To this end, with the support of PetroTal, the company Pacaya was createdwhich markets vacuum-packed eggs.

PetroTal has also financed taricaya population and genetic studies to identify possible changes related to the commercial exploitation of the species by different actors. This work, carried out by the Peruvian Amazon Research Institute (IIAP), confirmed that the management actions promoted by Sernanp have contributed to the recovery of the species.

PetroTal's Environmental Management Manager, Sonia Lou, accompanied the head of the Ministry of the Environment (Minam) and emphasized the company's commitment to the environment. strict compliance with the plan that ensures projects and activities to preserve Loreto's largest protected natural area.
