Collaboration between PetroTal and SERNANP led to the formalization of the Pacaya S.A. company, which this season will market 30,000 salted and vacuum-packed eggs.
Inspired by the ancestral custom of the Amazonian peoples of consuming taricaya eggs, nine associations of management groups from the town of Bretaña formed Pacaya S.A., the first and only company in Peru that - with the support of PetroTal and the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (SERNANP) - markets vacuum-packed eggs, with sanitary registration, in supermarkets in Iquitos and San Martín.
PetroTal, a company led and operated by Peruvians, encouraged and promoted the formalization of the Pacaya company as part of the cooperation agreement with SERNANP and the actions to promote sustainable economic activities established in the Environmental Compensation Plan, which includes the evaluation of the taricaya population and the implementation of sustainable commercial articulation of taricaya eggs.
Last year alone, this company sold around 14,000 taricaya eggs in brine and vacuum-packed, and this season it expects to sell around 30,000 units.
Taricaya eggs have a high nutritional value (protein, iron, calcium, carbohydrates and others) -even higher than chicken eggs- and vacuum-packed can last up to six months.
In addition to having a presence in large supermarkets in Iquitos, this product can also be enjoyed at the renowned Maido restaurant, which offers it as part of its Amazonian menu experience.
This innovative presentation of taricaya eggs, extracted legally and under a management plan that guarantees the preservation of the species, encourages the consumption of salted and vacuum-packed taricaya eggs, with the guarantee offered by the sanitary registration and the Ally for Conservation seal, which endorses their sustainable origin. PetroTal also provides training - through SERNANP - to management groups in the town of Bretaña, capital of the Puinahua district where the Bretaña Norte Field of Lot 95 is located, to add value to the taricaya eggs and strengthen their organizational system.
