The Organización Social de Pescadores y Procesadores Artesanales (OSPPA) - Bretaña planted 50 turtle nests with the support of PetroTal, Sernanp and Despensa Amazónica., and the active participation of the children of Puinahua.
The taricaya is a small and colorful species of turtle that has become a symbol of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve and requires responsible and sustainable management for its preservation. For this reason, PetroTal, the operator of Block 95, has been working with the State and civil society to ensure its development in the Puinahua district.
Along these lines, the Social Organization of Artisanal Fishermen and Processors (OSPPA) Brittany planted 50 nests of taricaya eggs with the advice of the Amazonian Civil Association Despensa Amazónica, the support of the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp) and the support of PetroTal.
The purpose of this effort is to preserve the species with the birth of approximately 1,500 taricayas, which will be released in the Pacaya basin of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve to increase its population.
The planting of the nests took place on an artificial beach built in Bretaña, the capital of the district where the Bretaña Norte del Lote 95 field is located, with the participation of local elementary school students, who learned about various aspects of this important conservation work.
The children witnessed the careful handling of the taricaya eggs, listened attentively to explanations of the hatching process and took part in the environmental education workshops conducted by Despensa Amazónica.
This activity is part of the Environmental Education Program of the Taricaya 2023 Campaign.
