- “Pacaya Samiria: Environmental Compensation Plan” summarizes the scope, achievements and stories of the implementation of a plan that generates environmental and social benefits.
- The plan includes sustainable activities in the reserve that have promoted the repopulation of taricayas, patrols, and responsible entrepreneurship with natural resources, among others.
Since the beginning of its operations, PetroTal, in partnership with the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp), has been implementing its Environmental Compensation Plan (PCA), a long-term commitment to contribute to the conservation of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.
The progress of the PCA, as well as the actions carried out in compliance with the inter-institutional cooperation agreement between Sernanp and PetroTal, operator of Block 95 (Loreto), have been included in the book “Pacaya Samiria: Environmental Compensation Plan”.”, which was presented yesterday.
The book is a literary production that took about two years to document the sustainable and formal activities contemplated in the plan, including support for the formalization of management groups, the preservation of taricaya turtles, the commercialization of their eggs, the promotion of sustainable paiche fishing and the use of their derivatives.
One of the plan's main lines of action has been to strengthen surveillance and territorial control in the reserve, with more than 230 patrols carried out to prevent illegal activities such as hunting, fishing or unauthorized logging, as well as the improvement of surveillance posts.
At the presentation, Guillermo Flórez, PetroTal's general manager, emphasized that the book will be a technical reference material, but easy to read, to demonstrate that oil activity is compatible with environmental protection.
In turn, Manolo Zúñiga, president and CEO of PetroTal, recalled that one of the challenges faced by the Brittany Field of Block 95 development project was its proximity to the Pacaya Samiria and that they managed to manage it with a sustainable and responsible activity with environmental care and local progress.
José Carlos Nieto, head of Sernanp, emphasized that the coordinated work with PetroTal, within the framework of the plan, has given an important boost to the conservation of the reserve and the promotion of sustainable businesses. One example of this was PetroTal's contribution of S/. 400,000 to the Entrepreneurs for Nature 2024 contest.
He also emphasized that “the implementation of environmental compensation plans in natural protected areas is an opportunity to advance in the restoration of ecosystems, if the technical approach, compliance with environmental standards and the participation of the people who live with the forest are prioritized”.
The PCA and the cooperation agreement are part of the environmental commitments established in the Environmental Impact Study for the Bretaña Field development project, as part of PetroTal's Environmental Management Strategy. Sernanp's participation is part of its mission to guarantee the conservation and sustainable use of the Pacaya Samiria.
