• Lhe joint between the State, the private sector and local population has been vital for local fishermen to develop sustainable enterprises.

The training, technical assistance and equipment provided by the Centro de Innovación Productiva y Transferencia Tecnológica (CITE) Productivo Maynas have been fundamental for the artisanal fishermen of Puinahua, with the support of the company PetroTal, to become producers of innovative food based on paiche and vacuum-packed taricaya eggs, both of which are in growing demand in Iquitos.

The director of the CITE Productivo Maynas, Margot Orbe Peixoto, emphasized that the development of these quality products with traditional Amazonian inputs and flavors has been the result of a joint effort between the State, the private sector and the local population.

As part of the Fishing Innovation Project -supported by PetroTal, Despensa Amazónica, CITE, Sernanp and other allies-, the fishermen of the Arahuana Fish organization carry out sustainable and formal paiche fishing in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. With this raw material, CITE produces hamburgers, nuggets and cuts marketed under the King Bretaña brand.

Similarly, within the framework of PetroTal's Environmental Compensation Plan and its alliance with Sernanp, the fishermen also contribute to the preservation of the taricaya in Pacaya Samiria while developing a sustainable economic activity. As part of this initiative, a quota of taricaya eggs is authorized to be processed and packaged at the CITE and then sold in different markets.

«It is very important in Loreto to work in coordination with all stakeholders, especially the private company, such as PetroTal, which is supporting and giving support to fishermen,» said Margot Orbe.

Regarding the paiche products, the CITE director highlighted the fishermen's commitment to improve their processes to bring products with sanitary registration to the market. Currently, King Bretaña products can be found in OK Supermercados in Iquitos and will soon be available in Flora y Fauna stores in Lima.
