On July 13, a black caiman was found in the Brittany Field of Block 95, operated by PetroTal, and safely released in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, through coordination between the company and the authority, Sernanp.
The sighting of the Melanosuchus niger in the vicinity of the oil field, located in the district of Puinahua, Loreto region. This species is one of the most emblematic of the Peruvian Amazon and is classified as “near threatened” on the country's official list of protected wildlife.
Coordinated rescue and release

Following the discovery, PetroTal's trained personnel activated the wildlife rescue protocol, safely capturing the animal without endangering its well-being. The animal, which weighed approximately 5 kilograms and measured 1.17 meters, was kept in appropriate conditions.
Days later, in a joint action with the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp), the black caiman was transported and released in the Santa Rosa sector, Pacaya watershed, within the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, one of the most important tropical wetlands in the world.
Species protected by national and international regulations
The black caiman in Pacaya Samiria is protected by Supreme Decree N° 004-2014-Minagri, which prohibits its capture, commercialization and transport for commercial purposes. Likewise, this species is listed in Appendix I of the CITES Convention, which prevents its international trade.
These measures seek to ensure the preservation of this keystone species for Amazonian ecosystems, where it plays a fundamental ecological role as a top predator.
An indicator of good environmental status
The presence of this species close to the Brittany Field Guard Post No. 6 is considered a positive sign of the good state of the ecosystems surrounding PetroTal's operations. This fact reinforces the company's commitment to responsible environmental management and biodiversity protection.
